# CIBJO CENTENARY CONGRESS  Key Discussions & Insights

## By Romy Gakh Baram, Director Global Marketing & Brand

It was particularly meaningful for me to attend my first CIBJO Congress as the organization celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Over four days, I had the opportunity to listen, learn and exchange views with people from across the jewellery, diamond, gemstone and precious-metals value chain. The discussions went far beyond individual market challenges. Again and again, they returned to a bigger question: **How do we shape the future of an industry with such a rich heritage while keeping it relevant, trusted and desirable?**

With this in mind, I have brought together some of the key discussions and insights that stood out to me during the Congress. I hope they will provide useful perspectives as you consider your own business priorities and plans for the future.

### Across the four days, discussions repeatedly returned to these interconnected questions:

How do we rebuild consumer desire?
How do we create new value?
How do we use technology and AI responsibly?
How do we strengthen trust and transparency?
How do we navigate geopolitical and economic disruption?
How do we make a heritage industry relevant to the next generation?

On the first day of the Congress, Cyril Vigneron, Chairman of Cartier Culture and Philanthropy, emphasized the importance of a forum at the Congress where everyone has a place, particularly at a time of profound global uncertainty. He highlighted that values are not simply inherited.  Values are shaped by what we do and how we act. His message was a call to build purpose-driven coalitions and to remain open to new partnerships, recognizing that even what may seem most permanent can change.

Gaetano Cavalieri, President of CIBJO, reminded the industry during the Centenary Congress, looking to the future means building on the experience and knowledge accumulated over generations while remaining open to change and innovation.

### Six Themes That Shaped the Conversation

**01  —  REIGNITING DESIRE**

This was probably the strongest commercial theme.

Gareth Penny, Chairman of the Board at Ninety One, raised a fundamental question for the natural-diamond industry to consider: why choose a natural diamond?  His message was that marketing needs to become more emotional, consistent and aspirational when engaging younger consumers.

Martin Rapaport made a related but somewhat different argument: the industry needs to reposition natural diamonds as luxury, focusing on scarcity, wealth creation and aspiration rather than competing primarily on price. He also highlighted the opportunity in the pre-owned natural-diamond market.

The Diamond Dudes panel, Rob Bates, Avi Krawitz and Edahn Golan, brought the discussion back to market fundamentals: reduced rough supply is helping support natural-diamond prices, but demand remains the central challenge. Bates highlighted weak U.S. consumer sentiment outside the high end, while their panel stressed the need for better marketing.

KEY INSIGHT: The natural diamond industry cannot rely on rarity, heritage and supply dynamics alone. The challenge is not simply to explain the natural diamond. It is to create renewed desire for it.

**02 —  DIFFERENTIATION**

The natural vs. synthetic debate moved from marketing language into industry standards**.** This became one of the Congress's most consequential outcomes. CIBJO's Board approved the recommendation that **“**synthetic” become the sole scientific descriptor in the Blue Books for created products with the same chemical composition, physical properties and structure as their natural equivalents. CIBJO acknowledged that “laboratory-grown” and “laboratory-created” remain marketing terms accepted in certain jurisdictions and that local law takes precedence.

The Laboratory-Grown Diamond Committee presented the other side of the market reality: more than half of U.S. engagement rings by volume now contain laboratory-grown diamonds, according to data presented to Congress.

JCK's post-Congress coverage describes the terminology debate as likely only the beginning of a broader discussion, while Rob Bates subsequently reported that the issue is moving into the U.S. regulatory arena.

Mr. Mehuk Shah, President of the WFDB,   emphasized that natural and laboratory-grown diamonds should be viewed as distinct categories rather than simply competing products. He noted that “diamonds are forever” and “diamonds for everyone” can coexist, while suggesting that laboratory-grown diamonds can serve as a gateway to the broader diamond category, with consumers potentially moving towards natural diamonds as their purchasing power increases.

KEY INSIGHT:  The terminology debate is about how the industry communicates value and creates consumer clarity.

**03  —  TECHNOLOGY & AI**

The AI panel brought together perspectives from technology, law, creativity, and the broader industry to explore both the opportunities and challenges AI presents.

AI is accelerating innovation, enabling faster product development, improving operational efficiency, and supporting more informed decision-making. At the same time, its rapid adoption raises important questions around intellectual property, data ownership, accountability, human oversight, responsible use, and the preservation of creativity and craftsmanship. As AI continues to evolve, finding the right balance between technological progress and human judgment will be essential.

**The discussion moved beyond “AI is coming” toward how companies should actually use it. Watch👇**

<iframe width="256" height="145" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/RShL1Y_Jj98?start=3&amp;feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen title="CIBJO Congress Session - AI and its legal and ethical implications for jewellery, Sep 5, 2026" style="position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 100%; height: 100%; border-width: medium; border-style: none; border-color: currentcolor; border-image: none;"></iframe>

Commenting on the panel participation our CEO Mr. Tzafrir Engelhard, said: “For Sarine, AI has been strategic for many years. Machine learning allows us to address highly complex problems that were previously difficult or impossible to solve. This requires a very different level of technological expertise, significant amounts of data, sophisticated data management, AI and data engineers, and an entire ecosystem within the company that enables us to solve problems in new ways.”

The panel highlighted that AI adoption requires more than implementing new tools. It requires an ecosystem of expertise, data, skills and processes that can translate AI capabilities into practical business solutions and measurable value.

![Tz 1 (002)](https://blog.sarine.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Tz%201%20(002).jpg?width=563&height=375&name=Tz%201%20(002).jpg)

This was reinforced by CIBJO's Gemmological Commission on the final day, which proposed that AI used in gemstone testing, grading or decision support should be subject to the same QA, control and verification requirements as conventional methods.

**KEY INSIGHT: AI conversation is moving toward application, governance, accountability and measurable value. The future is not AI technology versus humans. It is technology amplifying expertise, creativity and craftsmanship.**

**04  — TRUST**

Trust is becoming the industry's common currency and appeared across diamonds, AI, sustainability, watches, gem labs and supply chains.

The Sustainability Commission presented a revised Responsible Sourcing Toolkit, designed particularly to help SMEs conduct responsible-sourcing due diligence. Speakers emphasised that sustainability needs collaboration and practical implementation rather than isolated initiatives.

The Swiss watch industry presented an interesting model: gemstones are treated as precision components, with traceability and supply-chain information used to improve accountability and consumer confidence.

The Blue List went in the same direction by attempting to establish clearer definitions for words such as **“**sustainable,” “responsible” and “ethical.”

**KEY INSIGHT: Transparency is increasingly moving from a CSR topic to a commercial and consumer confidence issue.**

**CIBJO'S MESSAGE:** Standards are not simply technical documents. They create a common language that enables businesses and consumers to understand what is being sold and what claims can be trusted.

**05  —  RESILIENCE**

The geopolitics panel looked at the effects of: geopolitical instability, sanctions, tariffs, precious-metal prices, supply-chain disruption, and changing trade routes.  The industry is operating in an environment where geopolitics, regulation, commodity prices and consumer behaviour are increasingly interconnected.

Geopolitical developments increasingly influence:

Where products are sourced **→**Where they are manufactured **→** How they are traded **→** What they cost **→** What consumers can afford

Manufacturers are already responding to higher precious-metal prices through lighter-weight jewellery, alternative alloys and different combinations of metals and gemstones.

**KEY INSIGHT: Geopolitics is now directly affecting jewellery economics. Commercial strategy can no longer be separated from geopolitical and regulatory strategy.**

**06  —  COLLABORATION**

The future of the industry also depends on people, skills and smaller producers. The artisanal-mining panel was particularly interesting for me, because it challenged the idea that responsible sourcing is about eliminating risk. Around 80% of coloured gemstones globally are mined by artisanal and small-scale miners, according to the discussion. Speakers argued that formalisation can create economic opportunity, improve traceability and bring miners into legitimate markets.

Feriel Zerouki highlighted that artisanal mining should not be left behind and described it as a potential component of natural-diamond traceability.

---

Well, it is difficult to summarize four days of discussions, diverse perspectives and thought-provoking conversations in just a few points. But following message stayed with me most:

**THE INDUSTRY IS NOT SHORT OF TECHNOLOGY, EXPERTISE OR HERITAGE. THE CHALLENGE IS HOW TO CONNECT THEM.**

**On a Personal Note**

Congratulations to Mr. Gaetano Cavalieri and the entire CIBJO team on an exceptional Centenary Congress. Bringing together such a diverse community of industry leaders, experts, and stakeholders to celebrate 100 years of CIBJO while looking ahead to the next century was a remarkable achievement. A truly memorable milestone for the industry and a wonderful reflection of the vision, dedication, and energy behind CIBJO.
