Twenty-five years ago, a laboratory opened in New York with a straightforward, yet novel premise: that graders should tell the truth, stand behind it, and put their name on it.
That laboratory was GCAL - and that premise hasn't changed.
What has changed is everything around it. The science, the scale, the reach, the tools. But the foundation has remained the same: accountability, precision, and a genuine commitment to getting it right.
This anniversary is worth marking - not just as a significant number, but as a record of what that commitment has produced.
A Timeline of Firsts
We think GCAL didn't grow by following the industry. It grew by challenging it.
2001 - Founded in New York by Donald and Pamela Palmieri on three core commitments: independent grading, consumer protection, and the diamond industry's first guaranteed grading certificate.

2003-4 - Acquisition of Diamond Profile Laboratory, bringing direct measurement of light performance - optical brilliance and optical symmetry -into the grading process.
2006 -Launch of the industry’s first zero tolerance, money backed grading guarantee and integration of Gemprint for forensic diamond identification.
2008 - Becomes the first North American diamond and gemstone laboratory to achieve ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

2011 - Acquisition of Gemprint Corporation.

2012 - Forensic designation added to ISO accreditation and GCAL becomes a certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council.
2014 - Expansion of direct optical analysis to include scintillation.
2020 - Introduction of direct assessment of fire, completing the three pillars of optical performance analysis.
2021 - Launch of 8X® for round brilliant diamonds and recognition as the first gemological laboratory accredited by SCS Global Services for sustainability and traceability.

2023 - Partnership with Sarine Technologies.
2024 - GCAL by Sarine launches lab in Surat, India. 8X expanded to new cuts.

2025 - 8X expanded to radiant cuts. Launch of the Guaranteed 4Cs Certificate with Diamond Journey™. Collaboration with De Beers Tracr™ to strengthen traceability.
2026 - 8X expanded to cushion cuts, The industry's most advanced cut grading system continues to gain momentum.
Three Years In. One Shared Vision.
The Sarine partnership is still relatively new - three years and counting - but its impact is already visible.
GCAL and Sarine came together around a shared belief: that trust in a diamond should be built on more than tradition alone. It should be supported by science, transparency, and verifiable information.

GCAL brought a long-standing reputation for independent grading, consumer protection, and optical performance analysis. Sarine brought decades of leadership in precision measurement, AI-driven grading technologies, and traceability solutions used throughout the global diamond supply chain.
Together, those capabilities are helping extend trust beyond the grading certificate itself - connecting the story of a diamond from its origin, through manufacturing, to the moment it reaches the consumer.
Across New York, Sarine headquarters, and Sarin India, our teams now operate as one, combining gemological expertise with advanced technology to help shape the next generation of diamond grading.
Returning from JCK this month, one message stood out clearly: trust, transparency, and demonstrable quality remain as important as ever.
The response to GCAL 8X reinforced the value of continuing to raise the bar.
To the Founders and the Team
Donald, Pamela and Angelo Palmieri built something remarkable. Through changing markets, evolving technologies, and shifting industry expectations, GCAL established a reputation that has endured for twenty-five years. That legacy created the foundation on which today's GCAL by Sarine continues to build.

Looking Ahead
The goal remains consistent: continue advancing the science of grading, expand access to trusted gemological services around the world, and contribute meaningfully to the future of the industry.
Increasingly, that future will depend not only on grading accuracy, but also on transparency, trust, and the ability to give consumers greater confidence in the diamonds they buy.
By bringing together GCAL's grading heritage and Sarine's technology platforms, we believe we are uniquely positioned to contribute to that future.
And to the GCAL team, past and present: the precision and integrity that define this laboratory didn't come from a mission statement. They came from the people who showed up every day and did the work.
